This Magical Place
Today I got out on to the hill and it was amazing. The drive up Walna Scar in the new waggon was a sinch, 4x4 really helps. The Freelander didn't even slip on the ice, incredible! I finished work at 12 and jumped in the car, stopped at Hawkshead to pick up some coffee and bananas and drove over to Coniston. All the small lakes and tarns are frozen over and there's lots of snow on the ground still untouched. I was driving over to Coniston with the biggest smile on my face. I just stopped a few time to take in the view.
Coniston was empty. I got on the trail just after 2pm and shot up to the slate mines. I cramponed up and raced like a madman to the summit. I past a few others enjoying the winter wonderland. There are some icicles about, but nothing to ice climb over this way. I had to get the axe out near to the top just for show really!!
The view from the top was stunning and the cloud filtering through from Kirkstone was leaving a vapour trail of grey fading off into the sun. It was a surreal sight. And the cloud and sun gave it quite an erie feel. I got down to the car by 4pm, I didn't hang around, a few minstrals on top and a swig of water, that was it, well a photo or two!
I got down to the car at Walna and hit the 4x4 1st gear down the steep track, watch for black ice. Conditions look good here. Low temps will keep the snow pack here for a few more days, it should be perfect for the weekend.
Peace,
Dan
